Brief Description of Distributed Research Activity
Distributed research gives pupils an opportunity to search the internet in a structured manner, which provides them with a focus (prescribed topic) and a reason for using the internet as a way of learning (contributing to the class research repository). Using social bookmarking as a means of facilitating distributed research also has the advantage of allowing pupils to collaborate during the research stage of an activity. Research is generally an individual pursuit so this added sense of community should provide the pupils with increased motivation to complete the activity, not only for the teacher but more importantly for their peers.
